How should you protect your eyes during the ski holidays ?

Choosing the right glasses for skiing

Most of the French still tend to place fashion first when it comes to buying sunglasses. Only 44% of them prioritise the quality of protection provided. On the mountain, however, snow reflects significantly more light and UV rays are particularly aggressive. It is important to wear proper sunglasses in this environment because even in below-zero temperatures, you can get a sunburn, even on the eyes. Indeed, cloud cover does not prevent ultraviolet radiation from reaching the surface, and the UV index increases by 10% for every 1,000 metres of elevation. In addition, at higher altitudes, the thinner atmosphere filters out less UV radiation.

What are the risks for your eyes?

Snow reflects 80% of the UV rays emitted by the sun, a percentage that increases with altitude. When the sun is shining, 30 minutes of exposure is enough to cause snow blindness, which triggers a sensation of burning, watery eyes and sensitivity to light. People suffering from snow blindness should stay indoors, in the dark, for 48 hours. Even worse, long-term exposure to UV rays can induce lesions. They can damage the cornea, causing inflammation, the appearance of cataracts or the development of AMD (Age-related Macular Degeneration) .

What is the best way to protect your visual health?

It is important to ask your optician for advice on the UV-filtering power of lenses. Categories 3 or 4 provide the best level of protection. Category 4 should only be used in extreme cases, however, and cannot be worn while driving for example. Tint also matters a lot: yellow and orange tints are recommended for outdoor sports such as skiing because they heighten depth and contrasts. Lastly, make sure the “CE” marking is clearly stamped on the inside of the temple. This is a sign of quality and safety.

How should children’s vision be protected?

Protecting child’s eyesight from a very early age is imperative. Before the age of 10, the lens of the eye lets through 75% of UV rays, as opposed to 10% at age 25. The frames need to be adjusted to the child’s face to allow freedom of movement without the risk of falling off. The lenses should be unbreakable to avoid accidents in the event of a fall, and should be Category 3 or 4. Glasses should also protect the eyes laterally. Wrap-around frames are a good alternative for outdoor sports.
