Glaucoma is an eye impairment which causes lesions to the optic nerve. It is most frequently due to a build-up of intraocular pressure. If it is not treated it can lead to impaired sight or even blindness.

How does glaucoma develop?
Most frequently, glaucoma is caused by an increase in intraocular pressure. The build-up of pressure results from an obstruction to the aqueous humour drainage filter, which is the liquid protecting our eyes. In certain individuals, the filter becomes progressively blocked, which prevents the aqueous humour from draining.
The optic nerve head, which is an extremely fragile part of the eye through which the optic nerve exits, is progressively deformed due to higher pressure within the eye. The optic nerve is gradually destroyed and the field of vision is impaired.
Are there preventive measures against glaucoma?
Eyesight must be tested regularly by an ophthalmologist from the age of 40 onwards. As glaucoma develops gradually, many patients are unaware of suffering from the condition.
Is there a treatment?
Firstly we should be aware that although glaucoma can be treated, it cannot be cured. In other words, this means that although science can control the condition to prevent patients’ eyesight from diminishing further, it cannot restore damage which has already occurred as this is irreversible.
3 solutions for treating glaucoma:
1. Medicines (eye drops, tablets)
2. Laser surgery
3.Conventional surgery
