Good food for eyes

Eating healthily is key to improving your eyesight, and even preventing some diseases such as cataracts or age-related macular degeneration. Vitamins and other compounds present in certain foods can slow aging changes in the eye.

What are the right sunglasses for sport?

Since our visual health depends on the quality of the food we eat, its constituent compounds play a major role in preventing eye diseases. Vitamin A, for example, is essential for vision, particularly night vision. Vitamin C lowers the risk of developing ocular diseases such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). It possesses antioxidants, including the yellow and orange pigments contained in certain fruits and vegetables (carotenoids), that protect against ocular ageing.

Which sunglasses are best for my type of sport?

Dairy products, eggs, and green, red and orange vegetables all contain Vitamin A. These foods prevent the risk of ocular diseases in those with medical antecedents or hereditary predisposition, and slow the progression of eye diseases. Vitamin C, present in citrus fruit, kiwis and broccoli, absorbs harmful ultraviolet radiation emitted by the sun and preserves eye health. Carrots, peppers, corn and spinach, which contain carotenoids, protect the centre of the retina from oxidation. Of course, fish, rich in omega 3, is known to combat cataracts and AMD.

How to choose which lens protection factor?

People already suffering from macular degeneration or cataracts should follow this advice carefully: these foods will help slow the progress of the disease. Eating a rich, diversified and balanced diet every day is recommended for good visual health. A diet consisting of the four main food groups is essential. Taking such dietary precautions is not enough to completely ward off vision-related diseases, however. To protect your eyes, you should also avoid exposure to the sun and tobacco.
